Right to repair drone hardware
EU repair law does not reach flight controllers, which means every repair policy in this category is something a manufacturer chose to offer — or chose not to. Here is how to read one, and ours in full, limits included.
The default in this category is still “don't open it”
Buy a professional flight controller and, more often than not, you buy a sealed box. Tamper-evident stickers over the screws. Warranty terms that end the moment the enclosure comes apart. No parts list, no service documentation, no route to a component-level fix. When something fails, the answer is a replacement unit.
For a hobbyist with one aircraft that is an annoyance. For an operator running a fleet it is a structural cost: every failure becomes a whole-board replacement, every board replacement becomes a lead time, and every lead time becomes downtime on an aircraft that was supposed to be earning.
What EU repair law actually requires — and of whom
The EU has moved decisively on repair. Directive (EU) 2024/1799 — the Right to Repair Directive — was published in July 2024 and applies from 31 July 2026. It obliges manufacturers to repair covered products at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time, including after the commercial warranty has expired, and gives consumers who choose repair over replacement a twelve-month extension of the legal guarantee.
It is a genuinely significant piece of law. It also does not apply to us, and being straight about that is more useful to you than implying otherwise.
Flight controllers are not covered. The directive's scope is the product categories listed in its annex and tied to Ecodesign regulations — household appliances, mobile phones, tablets, electronic displays, servers. UAV hardware is not among them. The list grows as new Ecodesign regulations are adopted, but it does not reach this category today.
It is also consumer law. Most buyers of professional flight hardware are businesses, so even for a covered product the directive would not apply to that sale.
Which leads to the point of this article. Because no law compels it, every repair policy you are offered on professional UAV hardware is voluntary — a commercial choice, revocable, written by the vendor. That makes it a differentiator worth comparing, and it makes the wording worth actually reading rather than assuming.
How to read a repair policy
Six questions. They apply to any vendor, us included, and the answers are usually in the terms rather than the marketing page.
1. Does opening the unit void the warranty?
The single most important line. Look for whether the exclusion is scoped to damage the repair caused or extends to the whole product. “Warranty void if seal broken” and “we exclude damage your repair directly causes” are very different promises, and only one of them lets you diagnose a fault yourself.
2. Are spare parts actually sold, and under what conditions?
“Spare parts available” on a marketing page frequently means a replacement enclosure. Ask what is on the parts list, whether there is a minimum order, whether proof of ownership is needed, and — the one people forget — for how long. A vendor who commits to nothing has not given you much.
3. Is there service documentation, and can you get it?
Repairability without information is a screwdriver and a guess. Look for interface and diagnostic documentation, and check what conditions attach — a licence limiting use to your own units is reasonable; silence usually means there is nothing to give you.
4. What happens on an out-of-warranty repair?
The failure mode to avoid is an open-ended bill. A policy worth having quotes a diagnostic fee up front, gives you a written quote after inspection, starts no chargeable work until you accept it, and lets you decline and get the unit back.
5. Is the repair itself warranted?
A repair with no warranty on the work is a coin flip. Look for a fresh warranty period on the repair and on any replaced components.
6. Where are the limits?
Any honest policy has them — parts that can no longer be sourced, damage beyond economic repair, repairs beyond the manufacturer's capability. A policy with no stated limits is not more generous, it is less specific, and the gap gets filled at the point you need it most.

And the limits
We may decline a repair where a product is damaged beyond economic repair, where the estimated cost exceeds the price of a new equivalent unit, where a required component is no longer obtainable from any source, where the work is beyond our technical capability or tooling, or where ownership cannot be evidenced. In those cases we tell you why and return the product at your request and your cost.
Repairs you or a third party carry out are at your own risk. Flight hardware is safety-relevant. Verifying that a repaired unit is airworthy and compliant with the regulations that apply where you fly, before it flies, remains the operator's responsibility. Repairability gives you the option and the information; it does not move the airworthiness judgement onto us.
Why this is an operations question, not an ethics one
Repairability tends to get argued on environmental grounds, and those arguments are sound. They are also not why a fleet operator should care.
Downtime
A component-level fix you can perform is measured in hours. A cross-border RMA is measured in weeks, and the aircraft is grounded for all of them.
Diagnosis
Being able to open a unit means you can establish whether the board is even the fault before you ship it anywhere. Most “failed board” RMAs are something else.
Fleet economics
At one aircraft, whole-unit replacement is fine. At thirty, the difference between replacing boards and repairing them is a line item you will notice.
Tail-end support
Hardware outlives product cycles. Documentation and parts are what keep a five-year-old airframe flying after the vendor has moved on to the next generation.
None of that requires a manufacturer to be virtuous. It requires them to have written the policy down, and to have written it in terms that survive contact with an actual failure.

Does the EU Right to Repair Directive cover drones or flight controllers?
